Principles of Design in Teaching Art

by Irene Rinta

Anybody can do art. My approach in teaching art is to start with the basic principles of design and not the rules becasue the rules will follow naturally. It is by learning the principles that anybody's art can be made to communicate to its audience, be it...

"movement" as in a signage

"proportion" as in a historical painting conveying power

"balance" as in a sculpture

"emphasis" as in capturing weather in a photo

"harmony" as in a mural with many elements organized to depict one moment of political situation

"proportion" as in a portrait

"pattern" as in fabric design

"repetition" as in a drawing of a ball springing out

Irene provided an engaging, hands on activity for my students, complete with essential background information and real world connections. My students really enjoyed planning a model city built to withstand natural disasters, and Irene helped them test their plan in creative and innovative ways.
