Doing it Right Avoids Problems

The right survey, with the right measurements, provides for accurately detailed maps and the best use of the land.  Gary Salmen, owner of Right Angle Land Survey in Santa Barbara, presented this Land Surveying concept to our elementary students at our summer camp in Santa Barbara, CA.

Mr. Salmen and his son Trevis, also an Engineer, brought their surveying equipment and showed how doing math and having outdoor fun can be a career.  The surveying equipment they brought was a prefect tool to show the real-life application of math.  Also, the presentation and timing was just perfect since prior to their presentation, we had discussions and activities on Roman Engineering and Surveying and Archimedes’ principles involving Geometry.

Here's my 1st grade student demonstrating the relationship between radius and diamaeter in algebraic equation.

Irene provided an engaging, hands on activity for my students, complete with essential background information and real world connections. My students really enjoyed planning a model city built to withstand natural disasters, and Irene helped them test their plan in creative and innovative ways.
