Camp Schedule and Details

Los Olivos Elem. School (exclusive)

Week 1 Jul 15-19, 2019   9:30-2:30  (Friday ends at 12:30) 

Architecture Engineering and Interior Design Using REAL Building Material

Entering Grade: 5-9        Fee  $295

For beginners and repeat students

Make a mini architectural model with wood framing, truss, concrete and seismic tie-down applying structural design concepts. Practice geometry in building a staircase.   

Learn the basics of Interior and Furniture Design. Build furniture using leather, wood, varnish, elegant fabric and a load of other unique and fine material specially picked to make your dream house look like a model home designed by a professional interior designer, and that would be you!  This makes a good supplement to your new house or an extreme makeover.

Repeat Students:

Students from previous years may attend this as an extension.  You may renovate, expand, add a second floor, add details to your windows and doors, add real lights, gazebo, play structure, swimming pool, etc....go as far as your imagination can take you!

Note:

Bring lunch and drink.

Exhibit on August 9, 12:30-2:30, including students from all classes, and in previous years

Students will choose their own project to display.  It will be kept on site until the day of the exhibit.  Instructions will be given in class.

For beginners and repeat students

Make a mini architectural model with wood framing, truss, concrete and seismic tie-down applying structural design concepts. Practice geometry in building a staircase.  Learn the various careers and trades involved in designing and building a new home, how they interface with each other, why they need a project manager to coordinate all trades, and what is involved in scheduling.  This class will involve about an hour a day of lecture; more if students are receptive.

Architecture, City Planning, Inventions, and Economics w/ LEGO

Week 3,  Jul 29-Aug 1, 2019      9:30-3:30  (No class on Fiesta Friday)

Entering Grade: 2 - 4      Fee $295 

Learn to design and build as real architects do. With millions of Legos, we will build structures and a city according to specifications, in compliance with your city’s zoning ordinance.  Design your city to make it a livable place with infrastructure, complete with houses, school, hospital, mega-mall, farm, park, waterline, sewer line, electricity, and anything else needed to make your city a fun, safe and livable place.

Learn how the economy works. Earn money by building for others, buying or selling each other's invention, or simply by being a good citizen of the community. Earnings are in KE101 currency and may be used to buy REAL pizza ($1M per slice) at the end of the class.  Buy some for your parents and enjoy the rewards of your hard work!

Note: 

Please do not bring your Lego to class.

Summer Camps Santa Barbara 2019

Lego Automation, Games and Fine Arts

Week 4,  Aug 5-9, 2019      9:30-2:30    

Entering Grade 4 - 8         Fee $295 

Learn the basic concept and physics of automation and create a project yourself.  This class will talk about basic mechanical movements inspiring kids to invent something with a purpose.  One theme might be about helping the environment by creating machines for cleaning and recycling.  The environment will be Legos on the floor.  Can your child automate cleaning up of Legos at home?  

For Art, they will create art tools using Lego, while applying physics, mechanics, and art composition in 2D and 3D.  Students will create games using Lego for adults and kids to use as part of the exhibit at the end of the week.

This camp will stretch your child's problem-solving abilities and creative thinking.  There will be no pre-designed kits to follow other than their own minds.

Note: 

This class does not involve Robotics

Camp Location

229 East Victoria Street (corner Garden St), SB, CA 93101

KE101 summer camps are held at the building of The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, CA, an old Victorian Home within walking distance from the Alice Keck Park, the SB Public Library, and the historical Clock Tower where kids are sometimes taken to visit the giant gears behind the clock. 

Classes are held in its beautiful backyard shaded with trees and aired with a cool breeze from the ocean, fenced in safely and away from traffic.

Level 2 -Architectural Rennovation and Addition, Electrical and Landscape Design (For Previous Students)

August 7-11     8:30-12:00      

Age 9-15       Fee  $235

Just like in real life, dream homes are always a work in progress.  You always want to upgrade, rennovate or sometimes have an extreme make over.  Due to popular demand, this class was designed for students who have attended previous classes and want to come back for more. 

New Lesson:  Basic residential electrical layout and wiring diagram.  Create lamps and chandelier to  light up your house and install real light circuits all attached to the main control panel. 

Addition and Rennovation:  You will be rewarded with additional piece of land to landscape and perhaps build a dog house, a gazebo, outdoor furniture or a playground.

Irene provided an engaging, hands on activity for my students, complete with essential background information and real world connections. My students really enjoyed planning a model city built to withstand natural disasters, and Irene helped them test their plan in creative and innovative ways.
